Let’s Talk About Stress on the Farm

Bell Let’s Talk Day is January 30, 2019

Bell Let’s Talk Day focuses on raising awareness about how mental illness affects us all. January is a great month to talk about stress and mental illness. This can be a difficult time of year for many people. This is particularly true for farming families and communities.

Farming and stress go hand-in-hand. Stress has always been a regular part of farm life. The pressures of the weather alone can be overwhelming. Then, add in insect and weed control, market fluctuations, and numerous other factors that can impact farm life and levels of stress.

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix featured an article this month that addresses this topic of farm stress. This article should be required reading for everyone, not just farmers! The author, Toban Dyck, shares his story of anxiety and stress on the farm with refreshing honesty and important lessons for all of us. Click here to read the full article, and pass it along to as many people as you can! Thank you, Toban, for sharing your story and for your “strength, endurance, survival, and perseverance”.
